On July 7th, 2023, Dominic Fike released his album, “Sunburn,” and history was made. “Sunburn” is Fike’s third album and his longest so far with 15 tracks all containing 39 minutes of his paragon of music.
Fike centers this album around connection and growth by talking about his upbringing, especially his family, on both his first track and second to last track, “Dark.” His album starts off with an upbeat melody and reflection to his past with the chorus singing, “Photo album but the color faded from it.” In “Dark,” Fike uses the similes of time changing, such as the weather and seasons, by singing, “I’ll be gone like summer. I’ll be here like rain.” He also emphasizes the importance of family, because “It’s dark out” in the real world and you need them. His mom, Jessica Fike-McCann, makes an appearance as they talk about what Fike remembers from his childhood as the music fades out.
Throughout the album Fike takes listeners on a journey through past relationships, people he’s met and experiences he owes to old friends. On his tracks “Ant Pile,” “7 Hours” and “Bodies,” he talks about old lovers and lessons he’s learned from them. “Ant Pile” tells the story of two kids who turn into teenagers and find a connection. And even though at some point they lose what they had, the experience was new and exciting. “7 Hours” shows how love will make you do crazy things, and how it can be fun to be reckless and impulsive. “Bodies” acknowledges how it doesn’t matter how many past partners someone might have had and how you can start fresh with your new relationship.
All in all, go stream. I could listen to it ‘til I die. I won’t ever stop talking about it.
