Lulu’s Latin Food opened in 2020, which was a challenging time for restaurants. However, Lulu’s food was so delicious and its atmosphere so immaculate that it rode through the foreboding storm of the pandemic to its place as a foremost Latin restaurant in Lawrence. Off of Bob Billings and Kasold, Lulu’s small space hosts Mexican specialties and dishes from across Latin America. Its small footprint is usually packed with eager and loyal customers.
Sandwiched between Everest Liquor & Tobacco Shop and a pharmacy, Lulu’s Latin food gives culture and life to an otherwise depressing strip mall with an expansive asphalt parking lot. Stepping into the restaurant is akin to entering a refuge––a lively community trapped in dismal and decaying urban sprawl.
Along with a perfect atmosphere, the food is also delicious. Lulu’s street tacos are fresh and delicious, and the tortillas do not have an overpowering doughy taste and still do not disintegrate. The lemon and cilantro paired with the chicken make a fresh and filling flavor. The menu is extensive, from traditional Chili Rellenos to Ceviche. Lulu’s filled an inexcusable gap in Lawrence’s cuisine––serving food that better reflects the diversity of Latin cuisine than Lawrence’s Mexican restaurants.
The service is excellent, the workers are helpful, and my order came through in less than ten minutes. Lulu’s Latin Food serves Lawrence with an essential Latin American culinary culture that we lacked before. The excellent service and delicious food truly make it a superb restaurant. Its only flaw is that it is so popular that it is difficult to get a seat most days. Lulu’s is a stunning and unique addition to the tapestry that is Lawrence’s gastronomy.
