Fantasy football was invented in 1962 by Bill Winkenbach. Sixty-two years later, it is a well-known way to enjoy the American football season. Nowadays, it can be played through the ESPN Fantasy App.
This year is my first time participating in a league, which is what the group of people you are playing with is called, and I have to say that I am enjoying my experience. The process of fantasy football is rather straightforward; you either make a league or are invited to join one, and you let your excitement bubble and anticipation rise until the draft begins. If you do fall asleep and forget to hand pick your players, then you are auto-drafted. I do not know any football players besides Mahomes, Kelce and Brady, so it made no difference for my team. Each week, players battle each other, and their teams compete. The success of each team is based on the number of points the individual players on the team make, and the team with more points wins and moves up in the ranking. There is no feeling like the rush of when your team wins a matchup. I have only won twice, but it has been exhilarating.
I think I would enjoy this the same if it were fantasy golf or fantasy baseball because, like football, I do not care about those sports. For me, it is the community and friendly competition that makes this activity so fun. I was drawn to this activity because I enjoy celebrating people’s wins, and while I had heard so much about fantasy football, I really had no idea how it worked.
I encourage participating in fantasy football to everyone but especially those like me who can only contribute football edits to your fantasy football group chat because it is an exciting new interest to explore.
