On October 28, 2024, Kansas’s seventh Whataburger location opened right here in Lawrence. While it is a fairly well-known fast food chain, housing 1098 locations across the United States, this Whataburger opens its doors as Lawrence’s only one.
Shortly after its opening, I went on Tuesday night with my dad and sister to the restaurant, located at 707 W. 23rd Street. Upon our arrival, I thought that the building was very satisfactory: well-lit and housing plenty of booths. I ordered a Double Whataburger, and the wait time was very minimal, which is, of course, a key feature of a fast food restaurant.
The most commendable thing about my order was its lack of greasiness. I do not often have fast food, but when I do, I tend to dislike the high grease levels, and I was relieved to find that Whataburger’s food noticeably lacked this unfortunate feature. However, both my burger and medium drink were much larger than I was expecting, so I was not able to finish my meal, a feature I like less because I fear it might contribute to wasted food.
In terms of food items I would recommend, I think you really cannot go wrong with your main course, as the menu was easy to understand and generally offered items similar to what you would be likely to find at a variety of fast food chains. However, in regard to side dishes, I would strongly urge Whataburger customers to order their ranch dressing, as my dad and I both agreed that this dipping sauce was complimentary with our fries.
My burger cost $8.28, $12.55 as a meal, which seemed reasonable, especially considering how large it was. Whataburger’s general pricing is on par with other fast food chains, so the prices definitely matched the product.
Overall, I would recommend Whataburger if you want a fast food meal but want to avoid excessive levels of greasiness. Certainly, I think this establishment provides another valuable facet to Lawrence’s food options.
