Among the many new faces this fall, Seabury gained a math teacher, Susan Massaro. Originally born in El Paso, Texas, Massaro lived in over six cities before college. Even though she was constantly on the move, she married her highschool sweetheart, Tom, and together they have three children and eight grandchildren.
“My dad was kind of a natural teacher, and I’ve always enjoyed helping people with mostly math,” explains Massaro about her call to teaching. Even though Massaro is certified to teach science, she says, “I like teaching math because it has an answer. I’m not into debate or philosophy. I like science, but I think that math is easier to control [in] the classroom.”
After traveling around, she and her husband eventually settled in her favorite place yet, Kuwai, Hawaii. “When you become part of the community, you’re their family and they will take care of you, help you and do things with you.”
However, Massaro says that since spending time with family is her favorite hobby, she moved back to be closer. Despite her retirement, Massaro says that she decided to return to teaching for a few reasons: “I think what stood out to me [about Seabury] was the expectation of respect,” she says. Also, since becoming a Lawrencian, she thought, “It would be good to get out and meet people.”
