A new friendly face graces our halls, and she contains multitudes. Sophomore Mina Tangara comes from the Ivory Coast and is already getting involved in the school.
“I’m playing basketball and [participating in] Diversity Club too,” Tangara says. Though she brings enthusiasm to these activities, Tangara explains her initial reason for joining: “My family forced me because I’m tall, and they think that because I’m tall, I’m good at basketball, but I’m not. But I have to do sports,” she says.
Outside of school, Tangara enjoys “eating, sleeping and watching TV.” She says, “Sometimes [I] like walking outside and just [looking] at the landscape because here it is very beautiful.” Her favorite show is “Modern Family,” and she sees herself similar to one of the lead characters, Alex. Her favorite type of food to eat is “salty and spicy,” though she has found that spice varies greatly depending on culture: “In America, [the] spice level is very [low]. When I was [first trying it, I wondered if it was] supposed to be spicy because it wasn’t spicy,” she says.
Tangara looks forward to experiencing all that Seabury has to offer. Explaining what she hopes to gain, she says, “I [want to learn] French and English too and also [make] memories … For college it’s better to be in [an English] language … private school, [which could make] my future better.”
Though she is excited to fully immerse herself in the school’s culture, she is also dedicated to contributing to it through art: “I like to do it, and I like people to see it. [I look forward] to [seeing] how good I am.”
Tangara wants Seabury to know that, like many of us, she can be shy, but she is also creative and funny when you really get to know her: “I just want people to not think I’m rude or something because I’m just [an] introvert, so I don’t really talk to people like that. I just like [to be] in my space,” she says.
Please make her feel welcome and get to know this fiery new spirit among us!
