As our new school year kicks into gear, Seabury’s halls are filled with many new faces ― both of students and faculty. One of these new faces, Facilities Director Joe Simpson, has a special connection to Seabury as a Class of 2014 alumnus.
Simpson explains that the beginning of this year has been enhanced by his high school memories, saying, “Some of my favorite moments [this year] have been the morning meetings. [They’re] a perfect blend of nostalgia, and it’s just a lot of fun seeing [Head of School Don Schawang] giving his speeches and ending it with the typical words he always ends it with, ever since I was a student, ‘Go learn something today.’ That’s probably been the most memorable thing for me so far.”
He has also noted both similarities and differences between his Seabury experiences, explaining that a big difference is the dress code by saying, “We had a very strict dress code when I was here. That definitely threw me off a little bit.” However, the essence of Seabury is a notable similarity, as he says, “As far as all the students’ commitment to learning and … maintaining the Seabury culture, it’s the same. It’s always been like it is now.”
Regarding his interests, Simpson says, “I love sports and the outdoors. I’m a diehard Kansas City Chiefs and Royals fan [as well as] a die-hard Jayhawk fan, so [I love] following them, [and] I love being outside. I love going to the dog park with my dogs [and] going on bike rides.”
His favorite movie is “Blade Runner 2049” and his favorite music genre is “probably red dirt country.” In regard to his favorite food, he says, “Oh man, this is so hard [to decide]. I’m going to go with barbecue burnt ends.”
As for what he is most excited about this year, Simpson says, “Just getting to know all the students. I haven’t gotten to interact too much with any of the students here, so I’m just very excited to get to know everyone.” With this in mind, everyone should feel free to strike up a conversation with him and make him feel welcome!
