As students came back from winter break, many were greeted with a welcome surprise: a local restaurant serving incredible Mexican cuisine, Delicias Del Sur, became our new caterer.
Seabury students remark upon their previous experiences with the restaurant prior to them becoming our caterers. When asked if she has eaten there before, seventh grader Ayelle Walters says, “Many times. I actually had my birthday party there last year … I know Delicias Del Sur’s food is going to be good, so that’s exciting for me, and I also think that having more and different varieties of food than I’m used to is also going to be fun to experience.”
Faculty member Amy Meyers says, “I have eaten at Delicias [Del Sur] on my own, and I just really enjoy their food, so it’s really wonderful to have that here. I think it just offers more and different things for everyone, like for students and faculty, so that’s why it’s just exciting … New things, like new offerings, even new ways of having things set up [is exciting].”
When asked further about his excitement for the new food, senior Xavier Carrasco-Cooper says, “I’m so excited. It’s one of the main things that keeps me coming back here every day.” He adds, “Over the break, I got an email that [said] we’re having the new food next semester, and I was so happy. That was my Christmas gift. That was a miracle … I hope that they never leave, at least for the next five months, and that they keep pushing out quality products because loyal fans like me want to see more, not [that] it isn’t already good as is, but I just want more. I want more food. I’m hungry.”
During the first semester, Delicias Del Sur had a test week to assess the students’ interest. Freshman Rowan Hawley says, “During the test week, the chicken was really good.”
Some students switched from home lunch to school lunch. Seventh grader Maya Wilhelm says, “I think the food just tastes really good. I wanted to switch [because] packing home lunch is exhausting. I had to wake up a whole minute earlier.”
When commenting on how the test week has affected her and others, Meyers says, “I’m always looking for ways to generate conversation at my table, so now we have new food to talk about. Like, how do you like it? And I’ve noticed some of my advisees who haven’t had catered lunch have catered lunch, so it must have been a very good test week for them because they switched over.”
Students also commented on their favorite foods from the new menu: “The rice and beans [were my favorite], or the meal … with the sausages and gravy and rice, that was really good. Although, their desserts are superb,” says Walters. When asked about the new options of soup, Walters says, “I loved their butternut squash soup, which is unusual for me, and the salad’s pretty good as well.”
Meyers says, “I didn’t get any of the chicken the other day, but it looked really good, but the mashed potatoes were awesome. I really enjoy good food that I did not have to make. It’s so great. You’re like, ‘this is so delicious, and I didn’t have to make it.’ I really don’t even have to clean up too much after; I’m like: ‘this is heaven.’” When asked about the new desserts, Meyers says, “That’s the best part … I’ve really been enjoying the desserts. I had two cannolis the other day, and I was like ‘this is so good!’ I told people: ‘if you haven’t had a cannoli yet, go get one before they’re gone,’ or, [if] no one else was up there: ‘go get a cannoli.’ I love the desserts, and again, having been to Delicias externally at the restaurant, the desserts are to die for. We even got some during faculty appreciation week one year, and I was like ‘this is the best!’ So good!”
Similarly, Wilhelm says, “Maybe the cannolis,” when asked her favorite food she has eaten so far.
Overall, students and faculty members were thoroughly thrilled to find new food on their tables when returning from break, especially from a delicious, locally-owned restaurant such as Delicias Del Sur.
