Movie sequels can be a dangerous endeavor, especially when the original movie is spectacular on its own, as is the case for a movie such as “Zootopia.” Fans fear the risk of the sequel not living up to its predecessor and facing disappointment. This is why as I was walking into the movie theater, I was scared to get my hopes up for “Zootopia 2” despite the many trailers for it being promising. As the movie started, however, my original doubts flew away, as I was transported back into the world of “Zootopia,” and the movie was on the same level, if not even better, than the original.
Every minute was filled to the brim with the great jokes, moments and story of the original “Zootopia,” while simultaneously managing to introduce fun new characters, such as an adorable snake named Gary De’Snake and the villains of the movie, the Lynx family. I was also pleased that producers included a follow up song to the iconic “Try Everything” from the original “Zootopia,” in the form of “Zoo” by Shakira. Though off-key elementary school talent shows and karaoke have made me perhaps too emotionally attached to “Try Everything” to like the latter better, I appreciated the throwback and loved how it was incorporated into the movie.
Central to the film is, of course, the iconic duo: ambitious Judy Hopps, who, if you somehow have lived this long without having seen either movie, is a bunny, and charismatic Nick Wilde, a fox. Like the first movie, the movie’s plot centers around Judy and Nick, who investigate the appearance of a snake in the city of Zootopia. The movie is genuinely good from start to finish, and doesn’t stray from the original storyline.
If you, like me, enjoyed the original “Zootopia” but are skeptical of yet another sequel, I highly encourage you to go and watch this movie.
